About Next Generation City Action

Next Generation City Action is an initiative with three joint initiatives leading up to and during the C40 World Mayors Summit in Copenhagen on October 07-11, 2019. Young people are involved and contribute as either young academics, young entrepreneurs or young influencers to support and strengthen their role as the next generation of leaders driving city climate action.

With more than the half of the global population living in urban areas, cities play a key role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Increased urbanization leads to greater stress on resources and cities account for 70% of the global CO2 emissions. Cities therefore have an important role in setting the agenda for new innovative and green solutions through partnerships that can inspire other communities and governments.

The C40 World Mayors Summit is a great opportunity for bringing developing countries and youth in the center of attention, representing some of the fastest growing regions and populations in the world.

The young professionals will not only be inspired, build networks and learn from others but will also be able to influence, inspire and invite for partnerships by bringing own solutions and ideas to the table – creating solutions of scale and impact, and innovation across nations.

To realize these ambitions, the initiative in particular engages youth involved in tech-learning environments from the C40 priority countries and P4G partners: Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea and Denmark.

The Next Generation City Action 2019 focuses on solutions and innovative ideas targeting Carbon Free Streets and Next Generation Buildings, transport and buildings beeing two major causes of climate change.

The reception will take place at DTU Skylab – the hub for tech innovation and entrepreneurship, Diplomvej, bygning 373A, 2800 Kgs. Lyngby and includes a day where more than 100 young academics, entrepreneurs and influencers have worked and inspired with new ideas and solutions targeting green mobility and energy efficiency in cities.

At the reception, we plan to combine an evening of:

  • Short inspirational talks outlining diverse perspectives on the role of partnerships and the next generation in accelerating sustainable city solutions.
  • Unique opportunity to connect with 100+ young passionate professionals, representing 16 influencers, 14 tech start-ups from 16 groups of students from Denmark, Kenya, Columbia, Mexico, South Africa and Ethiopia, who will be showcasing their solutions to sustainability challenges within sustainable cities.
  • Provoking conversation around sustainable foods and drinks by engaging researchers, entrepreneurs and acclaimed chefs in providing the snacks and drinks during the reception.

Summit delegates already in Copenhagen are invited as well to the reception and we will make sure to provide busses as needed to support the transport to/from the city center.
